Keychron K8 - First Impression

One fine day in May I switched on my desktop PC only to discover that my keyboard would not process any key presses. The LED signaling that the num block is active did not light up (which it usually does) and I figured that the time had finally come to lay this fine keyboard to rest. Well, it wasn’t all that fine, in fact it was very cheap and came in an all-inclusive desktop PC package from Aldi in 2009. I think almost 13 years is a decent track record for such a thing. ...

On Impostor Syndrome

I recently read a blog post about impostor syndrome which prompted me to write down my own musings on the subject. I’ll try and not repeat what Kev has written on the subject too much (see link above). I’ve been struggling with a feeling of inadequacy for many years now. Sometimes I wonder where it comes from but I cannot think of anything specific in my past that seems like a likely cause for this. I don’t have a history of abusive parents who would belittle me at every opportunity, quite the opposite. My mother went out of her way to compliment me on my achievements. ...

Redoing my CV and Cover Letter for Job Applications

I have recently decided to quit my current job and pursue a career as a developer. This decision has been in the making for a while and only matured a short time ago, still I feel like it’s the right thing for me to do. Obviously, I’ll need to apply for jobs and for that I need to get the paperwork in order. I need to update my CV to make sense when applying for coding jobs (as opposed to scientific positions in academia) and I need a cover letter for every job I’m applying to although a basic template that I can edit as the need arises should be sufficient. ...

How To: Run Several Services Behind a Reverse Proxy

This is a follow-up article for my previous one which describes how I migrated my personal Nextcloud to a docker setup. It’s part me telling a story of what I learned and part “How To” so someone can recreate my steps. After I had managed that I figured I might as well go one or two steps further and host additional things on my home server. After all it has 4 GB of RAM, most of which is still unused. Also, if I only use these services myself, they should never generate enough load for it to become a problem. Or so I judged. ...

How To: Set up NextcloudPi with Docker

I’ve been successfully running a Nextcloud instance for a while now and it’s quite useful. When I did the setup the first time I installed the entire stack on bare metal by hand. Raspberry Pi with Raspbian (now Raspberry Pi OS), Apache, MariaDB, PHP, the works. I closely followed tutorials on it because I knew very little of what I was doing and there’s a lot to keep in mind in terms of performance, security, configuration of various things and so on. ...
